The Ballon D'or basically means " The Golden Ball". Originally journalist could only vote for European soccer players, but a new rule in 1958 changed that other players from other continents also could win as long as they play for a European club.  

Ballon D'OR is given each year to the best soccer player in the world. This award has been given to great players since 1956. This award has been given to great soccer players over the past years like Alfredo Di Stefano, George Best, Ronaldo ( Brazilian), Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldinho, Kaka, Lionel Messi, and Cristiano Ronaldo.

 

Messi is the only soccer player in history to win four Ballon D'OR, but Ronaldo is down by just one. He recently just won the 2014 Ballon D'OR.
